How to create links on deviantArt
(by Tobias, Mar 12, 2004)
There is a variety of options how to create links on deviantArt .. there is nothing special involved, just typing certain codes and standard HTML (don't worry if you don't know what this is, I'll get back to that soon).

Text Links

First of all, you can create a link to another deviant, refering to them, by simply typing

:devDeviantName:

where as DeviantName is the deviant you want to link to, and the "dev" is because you want to create a text link.
Note that there must not be any spaces between the colons and the devDeviantName).

for example:

if you type :devtobyf: on deviantArt in any posting, note, description or journal, this will become *tobyf (tobyf is my username on deviantArt).

Avatar Links

If you write "icon", instead of "dev", you will not get a plain text link, but the avatar of that deviant - just type :iconDeviantName: (again without spaces).

:icontobyf: - for example - will become

icons, however, do not work in signatures, by the way. also mind that you shouldn't overuse the icons in your journal, there is no official limit but more than 64 icons is definitely considered abuse by quite a few staff members.

and of course you can use the standard HTML hyperlinks too:

HTML Links

for these, you start with

<a href="http://www.deviantart.com">

whereas the http://www.deviantart.com is the link from your addressbar, you want to link to, then write the text you want to be displayed to the other deviants, and finally finish with

</a> (don't forget this - otherwise all of the remaining posting will become a link as well), so:

<a href="http://www.deviantart.com">this is deviantArt</a>

would become

this is deviantArt

You can simply type out the address too: if you just write "http://www.deviantart.com" somewhere, deviantArt will convert this to [Link]. If you write something in brackets directly after an address, deviantArt will make that a link as well. So, if you type "http://www.deviantart.com (deviantArt)", it'll change to "deviantArt" after you submit it.

If you want to write out a link, such as http://www.deviantart.com and not have deviantArt convert it into [Link], you put a :link: before the address and a colon after the address, so if you write

:link:http://www.deviantart.com:

it will stay the non-clickable text "http://www.deviantart.com" and will not be converted to [Link]

Thumbnail Links

last but not least, if you are a deviantArt subscriber, you can easily create links to other deviant's art in your journal, by typing :thumb5784659: .. whereas you replace 5784659 with the number of the work you want to include - you can see this number in your address-bar, when viewing the submission.

:thumb5784659: would, for example, become a shaded thumbnail looking like that:

Also, you can use :print12345: to link to to a print on deviantArt. Just use it like the :thumb5784659: code, with the same deviation-ID, to get a link to the print of that deviation (this obviously works only if the deviation has, in fact, a print).

Note that this last feature (thumb and print codes) only works for subscribers, and only in their journals. The :thumb5784659: also works in the thumbshare forum, so you can go there and show other deviants your work.

You can use the <img src="..."> tag for that, but it will only work if you have a subscription - just have a look here for other stuff you can do with a subscription: [link]

Will do ^-^ Basically, you need to be a subscriber if you want to put pictures or thumbnails in your journal, if you don't have a subscription though, you can still link to the pictures just fine ^-^

Well, depending on where you host your website, the codes might differ - but if you need the HTML format for a link to your devArt page, it's like this:

<a href="http://_______.deviantart.com">Visit me on devArt!</a>

Hope that helps!

You mean, like a background? Try going to this CSS test page, put your background pattern in the "Journal Background" field and select "Tile" in the dropdown box next to it ^^

You have to use an HTML link for that ^-^

Go to your journal, copy the address that shows in your browser's address bar (the one with the "http://" at the beginning). To link to it, just type

<a href="http://__________">My journal!</a>

and replace the ___________ with the address you copied earlier ^^

Hope that helps!

So how do I get pictures into my artist comment? I see so many people who have linked picture in their comment. The :thumb#: doesn't work there... =/ any suggestions?

They probably linked an avatar in the description with the :iconusername: code - but just to make sure, show me a page where they did link a picture in their comment, and I'll tell you exactly how they did it ^-^

Edit: Just a little note to anyone having a similar question, it turned out that :thumbXXXX: does work in the artist comments box, but only if you are a "Premium Member" (as in, have a subscription).

How do you post a pic on your journal?? not the thing where it says link but an actual link?
Reply

Tobias

Mar 28, 2011

If it's a link, you can use the <a href="">...</a> code from this post, if it's image already in your gallery, use the :thumbXXXXXX: code.

In case you want to include an image that's posted elsewhere, the code is <img src="XXXX" />. Replace the XXXX with the address of the picture - but remember that it must be the address of the picture itself, not just the address of the page that contains picture. ^-^

If you want to have a picture that's also a link, nest both codes. For example,
<a href="http://www.icyworlds.net/picture/2018/"><img src="http://www.icyworlds.net/img/pictures/3_keepgoing2.jpg" /></a> would give you a clickable picture, leading you to this gallery page.

I don't think you can embed videos, so I would use something like

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch/...."> The text you want to appear!! </a>

If you are writing that in your journal, and you are a premium member, you could be fancy, take a preview picture, upload it to TinyPic.com and then link it like this:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch/...."> <img src="http://i44.tinypic.com/15z4dcl.jpg" /> </a>

(replacing the tinypic link with whatever they give you under "Direct Link").

I'm not entirely sure that's allowed; but if you're positive it's okay, use the code in the HTML Links, and link to the same address as the +watch button does.
